![]() These drives ranged in size from 12TB to 18TB and were used for both migration replacements as well as new storage. Five of these models are listed in the table above and one model had only 26 drives, so it was not listed. ![]() There are six Seagate drive models that were new to our farm in 2020. To that end, we qualified nine new drives models during the year, as shown below. We had a goal at the beginning of 2020 to diversify the number of drive models we qualified for use in our data centers. The AFR for 2020 for all drive models was 0.93%, which was less than half the AFR for 2019. The 6TB Seagate model was followed closely by the perennial contenders from HGST: the 4TB drive (model: HMS5C4040ALE640) at 0.27%, the 4TB drive (model: HMS5C4040BLE640), at 0.27%, the 8TB drive (model: HUH728080ALE600) at 0.29%, and the 12TB drive (model: HUH721212ALE600) at 0.31%. This model was also the oldest, in average age, of all the drives listed. We present the models with less than 250,000 drive days for completeness only.įor drive models with over 250,000 drive days over the course of 2020, the Seagate 6TB drive (model: ST6000DX000) leads the way with a 0.23% annualized failure rate (AFR). There is not enough data over the year-long period to reach any conclusions. Backblaze hard drive stats download#The data for all drives, data drives, boot drives, etc., is available for download on the Hard Drive Test Data webpage.įor drives which have less than 250,000 drive days, any conclusions about drive failure rates are not justified. The 231 drives not included in the list above were either used for testing or did not have at least 60 drives of the same model at any time during the year. ![]() This leaves us with 162,299 hard drives in 2020, as listed below. For our evaluation, we remove from consideration 231 drives which were used for testing purposes and those drive models for which we did not have at least 60 drives. Of that number, there were 3,000 boot drives and 162,530 data drives.Īt the end of 2020, Backblaze was monitoring 162,530 hard drives used to store data. Header image by Denny Müller on Unsplash. In 2020, Backblaze added 39,792 hard drives and as of Decemwe had 165,530 drives under management. We’ll be watching the Backblaze blog for upcoming stats and observations as the hard drives continue to be tested over the coming months. Low annualized failure rate for Seagate 6TB drive (more drive days)įor drive models with over 250,000 drive days over the course of 2020, the Seagate 6TB drive (model: ST6000DX000) led the way with a 0.23% annualized failure rate (AFR). Backblaze tested 6,0002 pieces of that WDC model and found that the AFR for this drive model was just 0.16%. Only one Western Digital drive made it onto the report, the 14TB model WUH721414ALE6L4, however it’s important to say that HGST is a Western Digital brand, so they are under the same corporate umbrella – and HGST drives have consistently been outperforming Seagate drives over many years (and this year is no exception). Toshiba’s drives have been impressive, with a 14TB drive (model: MG07ACA14TA) and 16TB drive (model: MG08ACA16TEY) each delivering zeros for annualized failure rates (AFR) – though these drives had only been installed for two months by the time Backblaze’s 2020 stats were published. ![]() ![]() Most reliable hard drives from Toshiba, HGST, Western Digital The good news is, the annualized failure rate has dropped by 50% since 2019, where it stood at 1.89% compared to 2020’s 0.93%. keyboard_arrow_rightCameras of the Year.keyboard_arrow_rightGear Guides by Budget.keyboard_arrow_rightGear Guides by Type. ![]()
